The Potential Within: The Search for Purpose
We all have immense inner potential related to talents, skills and abilities, as well as feelings and deep states of being, which are latent possibilities within us. Our goal is to increasingly realize and express this potential, which is a process that occurs through the interactions and experiences we live. Especially those that motivate and inspire us and that we want to dedicate ourselves to and expand in life. They all represent the means by which we can facilitate this expression.
When it happens, we feel motivated, alive, energized and certainly more fulfilled and happy. But for different reasons we can limit it, causing a rupture between our lives and this inner need.
Our underlying motivation has always been to avoid suffering in order to facilitate this expression and to be able to experience many moments of happiness, trying to overcome everything that could prevent us from experiencing it. To a certain extent we have succeeded. We have managed to eliminate and reduce many sources of suffering. We’ve found ways to satisfy most of our needs and we’ve improved the conditions in which we live. But if we achieved a high standard of quality in life, would we necessarily be happier and more fulfilled?
Possibly the answer would be no, because in addition to the quality we can experience, we need to feel that we are living a life that makes sense and allows us to experience different moments of happiness as a result.
The Illusion of Happiness: Beyond Materialism
As we become adults, in one way or another we are forced to structure our lives. We work, take on different roles, acquire property, live in relationships, start a family and take on different responsibilities, obligations and commitments. We strengthen our ego by learning to define ourselves by external attributes and achievements and by the recognition and praise we receive.
Certainly along this path we have experienced some disappointments, conflicts, different problems and along with them, fears, insecurities, uncertainties, moments of stress and some illnesses and imbalances. These have led to discouragement, disbelief or an inner emptiness, an emptiness of being, which is something that affects millions of human beings today.
At the same time, because we are open systems, we receive a lot of feedback, stimuli and influences of all kinds, which can lead us to perceive broader possibilities for our lives. This has happened through reading a book, listening to someone share important concepts or taking part in a group or event. These moments were opportunities that supported us and allowed us to make new choices, gain new knowledge, make other decisions or realize possibilities related to expressing our potential.
The Journey of Self-Discovery: Uncovering the Essence
Perhaps allowing us to experience something deeper about ourselves at certain times. This may have happened through a special setting we were in, a touching encounter or an instant of tenderness or love. Whatever the reason – and sometimes there is no apparent reason – we were led to see things in other ways and from other perspectives.
In those moments we feel more aware. Less lost in thought or focused on the search for something outside. We experience a deeper connection with ourselves and others because we feel more alive and centered. And because we are becoming aware of what was arousing our interest, we make it easier to perceive something related to our personal purpose, allowing us to channel the energy into our conscious evolution.
How can we understand this purpose?
Focusing on the unique qualities that describe us, observing the ways in which we like to live them and express them. Realizing what we love to do. What makes us happiest. What we yearn to live and become or what we really want to give or provide for others. These are reflections that can lead us to a clearer perception of our purpose.
As we are aware of the limits of life, we cannot hide or omit ourselves. A human being who withdraws from this process of self-expression and effective living of their personal purpose is withdrawing from the opportunity to become truly human. That’s why, all the time, in one way or another, life is encouraging us to continually live the adventure of creating and revealing ourselves.
The Impact of Purpose: Contributing to a Better World
A purpose is not a goal. A goal is something that can be achieved. A purpose is never achieved. A purpose is a direction or a personal north. No matter how far we walk towards it, the path always continues. Like directions, our purpose allows us to define where to go along our life journey.
Without a clear purpose we are at the mercy of the changes in the outside world. It’s like being on a rudderless ship in the middle of the ocean – lost and without control. Our purpose isn’t something we have to invent – it’s something we discover. It’s something that already exists, whether we’re aware of it or not. And when we realize it, we’ll see that we “knew” it all along.
From then on, our focus needs to be on identifying more and more clearly what we need to do to live it, together with what we need to change and overcome in our lives in order to do so, which will make us more and more the protagonists of our own lives.
Our world today is changing a lot. It will certainly become increasingly necessary to live with more awareness, at least on the part of a large number of human beings, being able to take care of themselves, their own body and health and the quality of their own energy.
With a commitment that their actions are in line with their own intentions, inspired by a broader perception of the process of life and essentially living their personal purpose.
It is within our power to encourage and exemplify new attitudes within the groups to which we belong, be they our workplaces, communities or our families, developing more and more true and conscious ways of thinking and acting.
